Peter
Infeld. My life path was not pre-ordained. Born
1942, as a postwar child I learned early how barren life can be when we
are faced constantly with deprivations. Via our string producing company
Thomastik-Infeld a door into the world of music opened for me, while my
mother, Margaretha Infeld - who sadly died nearly nine years ago at
almost 90 - opened my eyes to painting, literature and the opera. I
studied singing, at first in Vienna and later in Italy where I was able
to work with the great Mario del Monaco and his brotherMarcello. Thus
began the long and stony road towards discovering my voice and its
qualities and to harmonize the rhythm of my life with the demands of my
company Thomastik-Infeld. Finally however, the activities with my firm
took precedence over the idea of attempting to become a professional
singer. But as fate would have it, five years ago I met Constantin
Zaharia who, as both teacher and friend, motivated me, after a pause of
15 years, to once again take my voice deriously. As a result of this I
made some recordings with the Europasymphony under the baton of Wolfgang
Gröhs, who supported and encouraged me both mentally and musically.
After my first two CDs which comprise the Italian and German opera
repertoire as well as operetta and musicals, I set my sights on the
great goal of recording Gustav Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde" ("The
Song of the Earth"). It was particular challenge for to interpret the
tenor role with its partially very lyrical phrases, as my voice is in
fact more suited to dramatic roles. This being the case, all in all, I
am actually pretty satisfied with the result.
