"Schrammel Music"

A Viennese Tradition

Schrammel Music was invented by Johann and Joseph Schrammel, two violinists from Vienna. In 1878, they formed a group in collaboration with contra-guitarist, Anton Strohmayer, and the clarinet-player, Georg Dänzer. The rest is legend: Their music is rooted in Austrian Country Music as well as in early traditions of the "Wienerlied", both in rhythmical and melodious terms. It became immensly popular within a matter of years. The first "Schrammel Music Group" played in the Chicago World Fair, a highlight of the genres´ success. Composers such as Johannes Brahms, Johann Strauss, Franz Schubert and many others all were inspired by Schrammel Music.

"The Schrammel Brothers´ sound touches your heart and makes you forget all sorrows. This music is a truely Viennese treasure" (quote by Alfons Egger, a Viennese contemporary, in: "Die Schrammeln in ihrer Zeit")
