Bassist/ Composer Stafford James, one of our new sponsorees, has been performing for more than 25 years in a variety of musical contexts. He has played and recorded with such "Jazz Greats" as Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Betty Carter, Dexter Gordon, Jimmy Heath and Woody Shaw amongst many others and has also composed a substantial number of pieces for the Contrabass including "Sonatina für Viola d'Amour und Kontrabaß"," Ethiopia Suite" for Contrabass, String Orchestra, percussion and dancers and "Des Alpes aux Carpates" for solo bass with String Orchestra and Female Choir.

For the past decade Mr. James has toured throughout the United States and Europe with his ensemble "The Stafford James Project". The idea of the group is to focus on the different textural aspects of the contrabass as a lead melodic voice with various instrumental groupings to facilitate this aspect. Other formations have been with trio and a "special quartet" of two contrabasses, drums and percussion. The present formation consists of two contrabass, one performing the melodic function with the Bow (mit Bogen), with the other bassist performing the rhythmic function pizzicato. A pianist and a drummer forming a quartet.

The Stafford James Project Spring 2000 tour will find the group performing in such countries as Italy, Germany, Austria, Belgium and The Netherlands.
