How are strings and allergies reconciled with each other?
Musicians might suffer from a variety of allergies, including allergies to rosin (tree resin), metals (nickel and chrome) and off-key notes. All our strings are guaranteed against the latter. In terms of the other allergies, Thomastik-Infeld is continually working to find solutions.
Thomastik-Infeld works with lens alloys which are suitable for metal allergy sufferers. A replacement metal for nickel is also being developed. In addition, titanium is an important building block for skin-friendly strings for allergy sufferers. Although it does not produce the ideal response due to its oxide layer, Titanium is the only metal that is also 100 % biocompatible. This means the material doesn’t trigger any allergies! Thus, Thomastik-Infeld is working on special titanium alloys to develop strings which are made solely of titanium - making them completely suitable for allergy sufferers.
When it comes to rosin, Thomastik-Infeld is collaborating with different partners who provide resin free of preservative ingredients.
