Why does my string look like an accordion from the outside?

If the optical appearance of the outer layer of a string seems to have moved (the winding seems tighter in some places than others), this means the winding layers have moved. Through the constant vibration and natural signs of wear, the string’s winding layers lose contact with each other over time. As a result, the outer layer loosens unevenly from the lower layers. The string must be replaced.
